FLEET MODERNIZATION PROGRAMME

In July of 1997, Air Jamaica completed the first phase of its fleet renewal programme. By then the airline had a fleet comprising six A310’s; four A320’s; two MD83’s; and two 727’s, a total of 14 aircraft. By January 1999, Air Jamaica implemented the second phase of its fleet upgrade programme. During this phase, the airline rationalized its fleet, with the acquisition of similar aircraft types, sharing common characteristics. Hence, Air Jamaica replaced its Boeing 727’s with Airbus Industry manufactured A321’s.   By taking the fleet rationalization one step further, Air Jamaica announced the planned introduction of one A340, 4-engine aircraft, for May of 1999. It was estimated that by November of that year, the airline’s fleet would comprise six- A320’s; four- A310’s; two-A321’s; one-A340; and 2 McDonald Douglas 83 aircraft. Boasting the youngest and most modern fleet in the Caribbean skies, Air Jamaica utilized the new planes throughout its route system. This, the airline maintained, was in keeping with the “all-jet service” philosophy.

In 2000, Air Jamaica continued its fleet renewal programme and by May 2000 had 16 of the newest planes flying the Caribbean skies. These included one A340, two A321’s, seven A320’s, fourA310’s and two McDonald Douglas 83 aircraft.  Over the years, Air Jamaica has continued to modify its fleet. The current fleet as of May 2009 consists of one A321, one A319, and  seven A320’s.
