2004-PRESENT

Return to government ownership

In December 2004, after severe turbulence in the airline industry, the Government of Jamaica reclaimed full control of the airline.  The Hon. Dr. Vincent Lawrence was appointed Executive Chairman charged with the restructuring of the national airline. A comprehensive plan was created to restructure the finances and operations of the airline. The operations were streamlined with a reduced cost structure enabling Air Jamaica to compete in a highly price sensitive and competitive market. Notable achievements since the government reclaimed the airline have been:
The reconfiguration of the route network to remove unprofitable routes and reducing the frequency of flights on marginal ones
  • Modification of the in-flight service to save US$2 million
  • Improvement in maintenance procedures and systems
  • Adjustment of the fleet to match the revised route network and flight schedule
  • Improved fuel management
In November 2005, Michael J. Conway, a veteran in the airline industry with an impressive track record, was hired as Air Jamaica’s President & CEO. Under his leadership Air Jamaica’s continued focus has been aircraft productivity, route development and enhanced customer service.

New initiatives include an improved frequent flyer programme, increased frequency of flights and a newly designed website.
