The Bustamante Hospital For Children
The Air Jamaica family, in the spirit of good corporate citizenry decided to embark on the adopt-a-ward programme in 1997 when it was decided to adopt Ward 2 at the Caribbean’s only children’s hospital, the Bustamante Hospital for Children. To date the efforts have been ongoing.
The efforts begin with Air Jamaica providing transportation for Paediatric Urological Surgeon, Dr. David Gough from London to Jamaica to perform surgery on Jamaican children at the hospital, at the request of Dr. Colin Able. Prof. Yacoub a cardiologist from England and his team are also transported annually to perform heart surgeries.
A coin drive was undertaken in March 1998, launching officially the adopt-a-ward project.
The first donation towards the improvement of the ward facilities was made on April 23, 1998, when five (5) standing fans were donated to the institution, which was made possible through the coin drive. Later on August 12, 1998, the ward was presented with a 14 cubic foot Refrigerator. Other activities over the years included the donation of crib sheet material and pillows, as well as the staging of a bake sale. A raffle was also staged in conjuction with the National Commercial Bank, all in aid of the ward.
